The death toll is expected to rise from a devastating earthquake that struck Chile early Saturday morning and President Michelle Bachelet declared parts of her country catastrophe zones.
Interior Minister Edmundo Perez Yoma told reporters at a midday news conference that the magnitude 8.8 quake with an epicenter 60 miles offshore from the port city of Concepcion had left at least 122 dead.
The first television transmission of the damage showed collapsed highway overpasses and buildings in south Santiago, the capital, and in Concepcion. As many as 30 aftershocks, some of magnitude 6.0 or higher, continued to strike the region throughout the day.

Queens, N.Y., hip-hop artist Psycho Les ( via Aspen Times| )
Cognac, whiskey, a hip-hop artist and an Aspen nightclub are at the heart of a personal injury lawsuit filed Thursday in Aspen.
Local resident Kristin Scharrer is suing Lester Fernandez —better known as "Psycho Les" — and Belly Up Aspen. The suit alleges the bar overserved the Queens, N.Y., hip-hop artist, who's accused of trying to drag the plaintiff onstage before she fell and hurt her leg.
Scharrer's suit seeks more than $100,000 in damages. It claims that Psycho Les — one half of the hip-hop duo the Beatnuts — became "visibly intoxicated" on either whiskey, cognac or "some other alcoholic beverage" during a March 18, 2009, performance at the popular Aspen club.
Michael Goldberg, owner of the Belly Up, declined to discuss the suit.
