Event Description:

Join the American Heart Association in participating in National Walking Day on April 5. On this day, Americans are encouraged to lace up their sneakers and take time out of their day to get up and walk. Research shows that by walking at least 30 minutes a day you can reduce the risk of heart disease, stroke and type 2 diabetes as well as improve your physical and mental well-being.

Here are a few ways you can get involved on April 5 and any day:

  • Commit to move more! There are lots of fun and easy ways to build more activity into your everyday routine, even if you’re not a gym hero. Walk the dog, take your kids to the park, take the stairs, park farther from the entrance to your destination – these are all simple ways you can increase your movement each day.
  • Fun for the whole family! Look for ways to get your whole family involved and active. You can go on a family bike ride, play tag or an outdoor game, plant a garden to grow your family’s favorite vegetables – gather your family and make activity happen!
  • Engage your organization! Take steps towards a healthier work culture by bringing National Walking Day to the office! Contact the American Heart Association Denver office to get resources to help you engage your employees and staff in taking care of their health and getting their steps in.

Thirty minutes a day, five times a week, is an easy goal to remember. You’ll experience benefits even if you divide your time into two or three segments of 10 to 15 minutes per day.

So, grab your sneakers, lace up and get moving toward a healthier heart!
